Duke of Edinburgh

It is important for students to maintain a healthy lifestyle in high school by exercising and regularly taking breaks from school. Activities such as exploration and travelling are very good ways to relieve stress as a student in high school. On the other hand, it is also important for students to be involved in their community, especially in volunteering efforts. Not only is it helpful for students to become more aware of issues in their community and to become more involved overall, but volunteering is also weighted heavily in scholarship and university applications. For all the above reasons, we are introducing the Duke of Edinburgh award. This award is available for youth ages 14 - 24 and can be claimed by any number of youths every year, with a participation fee of $50. The main section of the award consists of weekly requirements that must be maintained over a given time period that varies depending on the level of the award you are trying to attain. Each week, youth participating in the Duke of Edinburgh award need to invest time in 3 categories (Service, Skills, and Physical Recreation) as well as participating in an Adventurous Journey. The Service portion of the requirements focuses around involving participants in volunteering efforts in their community and the Skill portion focuses on helping participants working towards mastering any skill or hobby. The Physical Recreation portion sets a requirement of one hour of exercise from participants every day and finally the Adventurous Journey asks participants to go on an overnight expedition or exploration outdoors. If participants are aiming for a Gold level Award, they also must participate in a Gold Project, designed to have participants interact and collaborate with people they don’t normally work with to achieve a common goal. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an easy way for youth to express their willingness to get out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves over a long period of time. Additionally, the Duke of Edinburgh Award is also recognized as a very valuable source of volunteer hours by various organizations and universities, including prestigious scholarship awards such as the Schulich Leaders award.
